KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 240 Afghan citizens, convicted of different offences, have been extradited by Iran, an Iranian official said on Saturday.

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Justice was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency that the 242 Afghans had been sent to their country under an extradition treaty.

Mahmoud Abbasi told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) the treaty was signed by the ministers of justice of Afghanistaninfo-icon and Iran in Tehran about two months ago.

Under the pact, the deputy minister said, 700 Afghan convicts were to be extradited to Afghanistan until March 20.

As many as 201 Afghan convicts had been sent to their country last week. The number of extradited convicts has gone up to 443.

Most of the extradited Afghans have been convicted of drug charges and illegal entry into the neighbouring country. They will serve remaining jail terms in Afghanistan.
