Govt offices inactive in most of Paktika districts

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Paktika province say government departments have been inactive in most of the districts and people have to travel to the provincial capital, Sharana, for official tasks.

Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Nika district of the province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that not even a single government organ was operating in the district.

“If we want to apply for a Tazkira (identity card), we must travel to Sharana for that and bear travel fare, hotel expenses and spend three days there, it is a big problem for us,” he said.

Musa Khan, a resident of Gomal district, also said most of government offices including judicial organs were inactive in their district.

“People always face problems and they need to address them through judicial organs which do not exist in districts, there are no Hajjinfo-icon and Islamic Affairs and Population Registration offices in our district and we have to go to Sharana for these works,” he added.

A number of residents of other districts made similar complaints. Local people say only a number fewer number of government services are available in Khushamand, Nika, Omna, Gayan, Zirok, Gumal, Barmal, Wormami, Wazakhwa and Terwa districts of Paktika.

A civil societyinfo-icon activist in Paktika, Jamil Ghairat, said only security forces existed in Khushamand, Nika, Omna and Gayan districts while government organs were unavailable there.

He said besides the absence of judicial organs, many other government offices were also inactive in Zirok, Gomal, Barmal, Wazakhwa and Terwa districts.

A provincial council member of Paktika, Abdul Mobin, told Pajhwok that government organs were not operational in more than 10 districts of the province.

“Our first demand is security in these districts and then government services,” he said.

Deputy Paktika governor, Sher Badshah Urgoni, acknowledged that government organs were inactive in some districts due to what he said security problems.

“It is a fact that even judicial organs are unavailable in some districts, but we are trying to reactivate all offices with the passage of time,” he said.

Officials of Omna, Zirok, Gayan, Terwa and Wazakhwa districts perform their formal activities from Sharana city and people of the mentioned districts have to travel to meet them for addressing their formal tasks.
