Missing from Cabinet meetings, Rabbani spotted in JIA huddles

Jan 20, 2019 - 19:48

Kabulinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Acting Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani has not visited his ministry for the past 20 days and has been busy with election related matters of his Jamiat-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (JIA) party, a source said on Sunday.

An official at the MoFA, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the acting minister had not visited his ministry for the past 20 days.

According to him, Rabbani, who leads the JIA party, has been missing from Cabinet meetings because he attended JIA gatherings happening the same days.

This comes as Rabbani was present at a ceremony held today for CEO Abdullah Abdullah’s announcement of running for the presidency in the upcoming elections.

On the other hand, MOFA spokesperson Sifatullah Ahmadi rejected the claims against Rabbani, adding that the acting minister had participated in many Cabinet meetings over the past 20 days.

Ahmadi, however, acknowledged the acting minister missed a few ministerial meetings which happened when the minister was to attend the India-Central Asia Dialogue in Samarkand. He said the acting foreign minister attended JIA meetings during his off-duty time.

According to reports, foreign ministers of Afghanistan, India and Central Asian countries met on January 13 in Samarkand city of Uzbekistan where Rabbani represented Afghanistan.

Regarding Rabbani’s participation in Dr. Abdullah’s election team, Ahmadi said he only attended the ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel and he didn’t go to the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon).

Meanwhile, according to the website of the Office of the President of Afghanistan, the acting foreign is not seen in a photo of a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Ashraf Ghani on Dec 27, 2018.

Rabbani was also missing from a photo of another Cabinet meeting chaired by CEO Abdullah on January 14, according to the Chief Executive Officer’s website.
