MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): A dozen people were killed and 30 others wounded on Monday when a suicide bomber struck a special forces’ base in central Maidan Wardak province, officials said.

The bombing happened at around 7:30am after a firefight between militants and the National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) personnel stationed in the Bagh-i-Zanana area of the provincial capital.

Mohibullah Sharifzai, a government spokesman, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the suicide car attack, saying a second car bombing was thwarted. A third suicide attacker was frustrated by security forces soon after the blast.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Dr. Mohammad Salim Ashgharkhel said 12 security personnel were killed and 30 others wounded in the bombing. Six of the injured were taken to Kabulinfo-icon in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Talibaninfo-icon claimed credit for the complex attack. Zabihullah Mujahid, the group’s spokesman, tweeted the bombing was carried out through a Humvee vehicle.

He said the rebels entered the facility after the bombing and killed several security personnel.
