Thousands pray for rain in drought-hit Kandahar

Thousands pray for rain in drought-hit Kandahar

Jan 21, 2019 - 20:40

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Thousands of people on Monday performed the Salatul Istisqa to pray for rain in the drought hit southern Kandahar province.

Hundreds of people from nearby districts also thronged the Eid Gah mosqueinfo-icon in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, to offer the Salatul Istisqa after years of drought badly affected crops and orchards in the province.

Nor Mohammad, a farmer from Dand district, said he arrived in Kandahar City to perform the Salatul Istisqa because there had been little raining in the past few years and no raining this winter so far.

He said fruit orchards and crops in many districts of the province had dried up due to lack of water. The underground water level had plummeted in most of the districts, he added.

A resident of Kandahar City, Roohullah, who also attended the prayer, said most of the people of Kandahar were associated with farming and livestock and the prolonged dry spell had badly affected these sources of income.
