KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): About 1,350 tons of fish meat is produced at 260 farms annually in southern Helmand province, the agricultureinfo-icon department says.

A statement from the Helmand Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department to Pajhwok Afghan News said 260 fish farms have been built on 300 acres of land in the province.

Zalmai Alokozay, the provincial agriculture director, said his department was trying to provide facilities to fish farmers and increase their produce.

He said they would no longer need to import fish meat from other countries once the industry expanded.

Alokozay said the agriculture department has launched technical and scientific training programs for fish promoters in the province.

More than 2,000 fish farms are available in the country and most of them are in Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Nangarhar, Laghman, Balkh and Nimroz provinces.

Afghanistaninfo-icon produces around 10,000 tons of fish meat annually.
