KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) on Saturday rejected a Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon candidate’s allegation that its commissioners sought money from him to manipulate the election results in his favor.

Earlier Wolesi Jirga candidate Mohammad Laeq Malakzad in an interview with Hasht-i-Subh newspaper claimed IEC commissioners demanded $500,000 to one million dollars for his success in the October elections.

Without naming any commissioner, Malakzad claimed first he was contacted over the telephone and later the commissioner himself reached his residence and demand bribe to ensure his success in the parliamentary polls.

Reacting to Malakzad’s claim, IEC head Abdul Badi Sayyad rejected his allegation and criticized the newspaper for publishing his interview and his ‘false allegation.’

He said Malakzad should move the judiciary if he possessed adequate evidence in support of his claim.

“The purpose of such allegations is to weaken the election process and election bodies. The media also acted unprofessionally by filing such a report and not answering our telephonic calls. We want Malakzad to refer to the judicial organs if he has evidence,” said Sayyad.

Mohammad Rafiq Sediqui, IEC’s media committee chief, also criticised what he called ‘unprofessional approach’ of Hasht-i-Subh daily and said a news story should be balanced and neutral.
