Balkh climate dubbed ‘suitable’ for fish farming

Feb 03, 2019 - 19:36

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Eleven fish farms have been completed and opened in Dehdad district of northern Balkh province, an official said on Sunday.

Fahim Jabbari, in charge of the National Horticulture and Livestock (NHLP) program in Balkh, told Pajhwok Afghan News the pilot fish farms, which were launched last year, had been successful.

He said 10 farms were built for raising fishes and one big farm was constructed for fish reproduction.

Jabbari said eight tonnes of fish meet was produced in each farm, with the total production reaching 80 tonnes. “Each farm is built on half an acre of land”, he added.

He cited official statistics and said Afghanistaninfo-icon imported low quality fish worth $30 million.  He said the purpose of domestic fish farming was to reduce reliance on their imports.

Balkh Agricultureinfo-icon Director Zabihullah Zobin told Pajhwok Afghan News the climate of Balkh was suitable for fish farming.  He said the Agriculture Ministry was making efforts to expand fish farming in the province.

Raz Mohammad, a resident, said he built two fish farms on his one acre of land and it resulted in his economic uplift. He raised up to 6,000 fishes during the past 18 moths and offered them to the market.
