Nangarhar governor’s transfer sparks protest

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Tribal elders, civil societyinfo-icon activists and residents of eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday rallied against the provincial governor’s transfer, seeing land grabbers behind the move.

The protestors, who closed entrance gates to the governor’s house in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, against employees, warned they would not allow another governor to replace Hayatullah Hayat.

The protestors claimed Governor Hayat was rightly serving the province particularly his crackdown on powerful individuals and land grabbers.

Abdullah Zahid, a civil society activist and an organizer of the protest, told Pajhwok Afghan News their aim was to keep the governor in Nangahar.

He said Hayatullah Hayat had been hard on land grabbers and powerful individuals thus they hatched a conspiracy against him.

Another participate said they would not go away from the governor’s house until the Presidential Palace reversed its decision of changing the governor.

A day earlier, Shah Mahmood Miakhel was appointed as the new governor of Nangarhar province and Hayatullah Hayat transferred and appointed as the governor of Kandahar province.

A number of womeninfo-icon also took part in the rally in Jalalabad, urging the president to reconsider his decision.
