Pompeo stresses truce for settlement in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stressed the need for a ceasefire allowing Afghan groups, including the Talibaninfo-icon, to reach a settlement.

Pompeo had spoken with President Ashraf Ghani by telephone on Tuesday, hours before the US leader spoke of peace talks with the Taliban in his State of the Union address.

A State Department spokesman said Pompeo sought to reaffirm America’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Robert Palladino said the secretary emphasized on a ceasefire that would allow political groups, including the Taliban, to reach a settlement.

Pompeo highlighted the role of US special representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in trying to forge an inclusive peace process.
