Ex-president Sibghatullah Mujaddedi passes away

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former president and spiritual leader Sibghatullah Mujaddedi has passed away at the ripe age of 93, family sources say.

Like millions of his countrymen, Mujaddedi migrated to Pakistaninfo-icon after the 1978 coup that led to the success of People’s Democratic Party.

While living in the neighbouring country, he launched the National Liberation Front party and initiated an armed struggle against the communist government in Kabul.

In the wake of Mujahideeninfo-icon’s victory against the occupation Soviet forces, the veteran jihadi leader was appointed as interim president.

Born in Kabul April 1926, he served as Afghanistaninfo-icon’s president after the ouster of the Dr. Najibullah government in 1992.

Mujaddedi was appointed as Senate (Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon) chairman in 2003. After the toppling of the Talibaninfo-icon regime, he chaired the 2003 Loya Jirgainfo-icon that approved Afghanistan’s new constitution.

Having studied Islamic Law and Jurisprudence at al-Azhar University in Cairo, he returned home to teach at Kabul University.
