Heads, members of election panels put on ECL

Heads, members of election panels put on ECL

Feb 13, 2019 - 11:50

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Attorney General Office (AGO) on Wednesday announced placing election commissioners on the exit control list (ECL).

Restrictions have been slapped on a dozen members of the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).

On Tuesday, President Ashraf Ghani decreed the dismissal of the commissioners. The president said: “Heads and other members of the IEC and IECC are dismissed after amendments to the electoral law are ratified and approved.”

Discussions and consultations on the draft amendments started earlier this month. The changes were unanimously endorsed by all groups before being approved by the cabinet.

The election law has 109 articles and 17 chapters. According to well-placed sources, a number of these articles have been amended.

The commissioners were appointed in November 2016 as part of the government’s efforts to ensure transparent and fair parliamentary elections.

The move comes amid criticism of the commissioners who have still not released final results of October’s elections for 15 provinces.
