US to remain sided with Afghans: Gen. Votel

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): CENTCOM chief Gen. Joseph Votel on Tuesday said he supported an Afghan-owned and led peace process and that the United States would remain sided with the Afghan government and people.

Gen. Votel assured this to Afghanistaninfo-icon National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib during a meeting on Tuesday noon, a statement from the NSA office said.

It quoted Mohib as praising the US for its cooperation and partnership with Afghanistan in diverse fields, particularly training and equipping the Afghan army and security forces.

The two sides also discussed peace talks led by US special envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and security related issues, the statement added.

Gen. Votel said he supported peace process to be led and owned by the Afghans and that the US would remain with the Afghan government and people.

The retiring CENTCOM head insisted regional countries should take practical steps in the war against terror and that Washington would continue supporting the Afghan defense and security forces.
