Afghanistan down Ireland in first T20 clash in India

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon on Thursday won their first T20 international against Ireland by five wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Dehradun, India.

After winning the toss, Ireland decided to bat first and set the rivals 133 runs target in the 20 overs game. For the Irish side, George Dockrell made unbeaten 36 runs and Stuart Poynter 31.

Leg spinner Rashid Khan clinched two wickets and conceded 21 run compared to 16 runs conceded by Mohammad Nabi who also clinched two wickets and Mujeebur Rahman one wicket for 20 runs.

Nabi also shined with the bat and contributed unbeaten 49 runs to his side followed by Najibullah Zadran who made 40 runs and this partnership led their side to victory.

The newest Test nations, the two sides are to play three T20 Internationals, five ODIs and a solitary Test in the series hosted by Afghanistan, foreign media reports say.

Afghan skipper Asghar Afghan, whose boys have been training in India for the last one month, views the series as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming World Cup.
