Baghlan to plant a million trees under ‘peace campaign’

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Local officials on Sunday said one million trees would be planted in northern Baghlan province this spring in the name of peace.

Baghlan governor Abdulhai Niamati, who inaugurated the tree plantation drive today, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the drive would be executed across the country as per orders of the president to spread the message of peace to every corner of Afghanistaninfo-icon.

He said as part of the peace tree plantation campaign, over a million trees would be planted in Baghlan. Government officials have been directed to protect the baby trees.

Abdul Gheyas Seddiqi, Baghlan agricultureinfo-icon director, said, “People have a high interest in planting fruit trees, 1.1 million trees would be planted in Baghlan and most of them would be fruit bearing trees.”

He did not know the overall cost of all trees being planted but said a seedling grown by the agriculture department cost 300 afghanis which would be given free of cost to government organs and against a fair price to gardeners.

Local agriculture officials said 500 acres of land in Baghlan has been allocated for establishing fruit orchards for next solar yearinfo-icon.
