Govt has shown flexibility on talks with Taliban: CEO

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah said on Monday the government had demonstrated flexibility on direct talks with the Talibaninfo-icon by changing its negotiating team but the fighters clung to violence.

Addressing government ministers at the Sapedar Palace, he said changes to the government’s negotiating team would happen, if demanded by the Taliban. Thus the insurgents would be left with is not excuse to avoid direct talks with the government, he argued.

Abdullah did not give information regarding the negotiating team, but said it would be comprised of politicians and other influential figures.

“Direct talks with the Taliban have not started yet and it is our responsibility to remove any obstacle to parleys. We should show flexibility as far as the nature of talks and negotiating team is concerned. Consultations in this regard are underway,” he added.

Referring to the crisis being faced by the election bodies, he said national processes should be carefully pursued. Peace was more important than anything else, the CEO remarked.

Abdullah believed members of the new election commission should be introduced soon and they should start their work so that existing concerns regarding polls were sarisfactorily addressed.

The CEO also hailed the opening of the Chabahar Port and thanked Iran and India for cooperation with Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Abdullah directed the Natural Disaster Management Authority to take effective measure to deal with floods and ensure the safety of people.
