LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A number of womeninfo-icon in southern Helmand province on Wednesday urged the government to inaugurate a long completed market for them in the province in order to help improve women’s economy.

Around three years back, the market was constructed for women at a cost of $4, 50,000 in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, but is yet to be activated.

Fatima, a resident of Lashkargah, told Pajhwok that the women’s market could not be activated due to the authorities’ lack of attention.

She said, “I make handcrafts at home, if the marked was activated, women like me would use the market for sale and marketing of their products.”

Razia Akbari, another resident, told Pajhwok, “I am a dental surgeon, if the market is opened, I’m ready to open a dental clinic for women in the market.”

Farida, a civil societyinfo-icon activist, told Pajhwok that women who were sitting at home idle would start some business if the market was opened for them.

She urged the authorities concerned to take measures for the market’s activation as soon as possible.

Wajeha Rasooli, the women’s affairs director, told Pajhwok that efforts were underway to activate the women market, but shared no further details in this regard.
