Nangarhar records 122 forced marriage cases this year

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): As many as 122 cases of forced marriages of womeninfo-icon have been registered in eastern Nangarhar province during the outgoing ongoing year, officials said on Saturday.

Nangarhar women’s affairs department director Fatana Azizi told Pajhwok Afghan News they had registered 122 forced marriages, which it showed a decrease compared to last year.

She linked the decrease in forced marriages to awareness programs. However, Azizi did not mention the exact number of forced marriages that took place last year.

Three cases of forced marriages and as many engagements were currendly under investigation, she said.

Islamic scholars say Islam prohibits forced marriages and that they have been calling on families not to do so.

Meanwhile, the Independent Human Rights Commission (IHRC)’s regional office officials expressed their deep concern over the continuation of forced marriages in the province.

Hashima Sharif, head of the women’s department at IHRIC in Nangarhar, urged clerics to help stop forced marriages through their sermons.
