JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Farid Faryadi, a blind signer, has been going through a difficult time due to his deteriorated economic situation.

The singer says his income from signing at people’s celebratory events like weddings is not enough to support his 25-member family.

Faryadi learned signing from renowned Pashto signer Ustad Mangal and people invite him to their celebrations to quench their thirst for Ustad Mangal.

Faryadi is originally from Laghman province, but he has been living in the Sheikh Mesri township in Sara Rud district of Nangarhar province. He lives in a two-room mud house against 4,000 rupees rent.

“Yesterday the house owner came to demand the rent and I had to hide from him inside the house. He shouted saying vacate the house if unable to pay the rent,” he said.

Besides Faryadi, his one small brother and two sisters are also blind, multiplying burden on his shoulders.

“When I was small, I was interested in the music of Ustad Mangal. I used to hear his songs and practiced accordingly.”

His small sister Noorzia is also blind and is studying religion and has so far memorized three paras of the holy Quran.

“On my way to madrassa, I face some problems when I don’t find help from others to show me the way.”

Mohammad Massom, 60, the father of Faryadi, is a carpenter by profession. He said he was also unable to work to his weak eyesight.

He said their family depended on Fayadi’s income. Massoum said he was concerned about future of his blind daughter because their current living standard was also not good.

Faryadi asked his supports and the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs to support his family financially.  He said if the issue of residence was resolved, he would be able to resolve their other problems himself. He said no government institution or individual had so far offered him support.
