PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will conduct a census of Afghan refugees living in Pakistaninfo-icon’s Sindh province.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting between UNHCR Representative Ruven Menikdiwela and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in Karachi on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the chief minister ordered top officials of Karachi to provide the UN agency a no-objection certificate to launch work on rehabilitating of street children.

Shah said his government did not have correct estimates of the number of Afghan refugees living in the province. He asked the UNHCR to conduct a census.

Around 1.38 million Afghans are registered as refugees in Pakistan. As many as 50,000 Afghans are living in Karachi alone but the figure remains disputed.

The UNHCR has a $200 million fund for the rehabilitation of street children and is ready to work in Karachi, if issued with an NOC.
