KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hopes there is sufficient progress in Doha negotiations with Talibaninfo-icon for him to travel to Qatar in the next couple of weeks to push further the conversations.

Speaking at a farmers’ gathering in Iowa, he said the Trump administration was trying to “find pockets” where there was agreement that everyone could begin to move forward. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and his team are holding talks with the Taliban in Doha.

According to the Associated Press, Pompeo called the parleys a complicated problem. :if you add in the regional players -- Pakistaninfo-icon, India, China, Russia, all who have an interest in Afghanistaninfo-icon -- it’s an incredibly complicated negotiation.”

Pompeo said any lasting Afghan peace deal would have to be based on fundamental understandings about different interests and incentives of the parties involved. He hoped Khalilzad would be able to achieve progress.

“I am hoping he [Khalilzad] makes enough progress and I can travel there in a couple of weeks and help move it along a little bit myself,” Pompeo remarked, as negotiators from the two sides are bargaining on the nature of foreign forces’ withdrawal and other issues.
