Over 122,600 flood-affected people in need of aid

Mar 20, 2019 - 11:52

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 122,600 people, affected by recent floods, are in need of humanitarian assistance in 14 provinces of the country, the UN said on Wednesday.

As a result of the flood, 63 people died and 31 others were injured, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

A survey has been completed in Kandahar and Herat provinces but it was still underway in Farah, Helmand, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar and Zabul provinces.

The highest number of affected people is in Farah, where almost 52,000 individuals are in need of assistance. A further 32,750 people in Kandahar and 18,340 in Helmand also require assistance.

Around 4,874 houses have been destroyed and 7,567 damaged in Farah, Kandahar, Helmand, Herat, Kapisa, Parwan, Zabul and Kabul. About 140 schools were also damaged in Farah and Kandahar.

Heavy rains on March 18 caused fresh flooding in Herat province. As of March 19, six districts - Ghorvan, Zindajan, Pashtoon Zarghoon, Shindand, Guzarah and Baland Shahi -- are known to be affected.

Inter-agency assessment teams, comprised of ANDMA, IOM, IRC, DACAAR and WFP, were deployed on March 10 to the affected districts.

Initial reports suggest approximately 3,668 people have been affected by the floods. With assessments still ongoing, this figure may increase. Floodwaters and mud flows have reportedly closed some roads, cutting off affected villages and hampering the ability of assessment teams to reach all areas.

Key immediate needs for food, NFIs and emergency shelter have been identified.
