4 killed, senior officials wounded in Helmand blasts

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least four people were killed and several government officials wounded on Saturday when twin explosions took place at a ceremony in southern Helmand province.

The blasts happened at 10am in the Karzai Stadium in Lashkargah, where government officials, including the governor, and ordinary people were attending the Farmers’ Day event.

Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the economy director was among the fatalities. Governor Mohammad Yaseen Khan escaped unhurt.

Deputy Governor Mujahid Safari, Deputy Chairman of Provincial Council Abadullah Alizai, Information and Culture Director Hamidullah Wiar and Agricultureinfo-icon Director Zalmay Aloko are among the 31 individuals wounded.

The injured were evacuated to hospitals and their condition was said to be stable. A journalist was also wounded in the twin explosions.

Governor Yaseen Khan, meanwhile, denounced the blasts and directed public healthinfo-icon officials to use all available resources for the best possible treatment of the injured.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts so far.
