KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Former national security advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar has hit out at the delay in the presidential election. He is one of the presidential hopefuls.

“No doubt, a serious blow to the constitutional process at this delicate time for democracy, Despite the government’s pledge, such decisions continue to be made without consultation,” Atmar tweeted.

He said that Afghanistaninfo-icon was at the cusp of a historic opportunity to achieve peace. But to secure a desirable outcome, he added, people must have confidence in the democratic process and the government’s ability to abide by the process.

“Failure here will have far-reaching consequences for peace,” he wrote, adding “Multiple delays, coupled with the disastrous conduct of the electoral process so far, underpin the government’s dismal failure to live up to its foundational obligation to the people.”

Atmar alleged the incumbent government could not legally continue beyond the 22nd of May when its term came to an end.
