Angry protestors raze toll plaza on Pak-Afghan highway

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Enraged transporters have dismantled a National Highway Authority (NHA) toll plaza on the Pak-Afghan Highway in Khyber Agency.

The protestors accused the government of reneging on its promise to give them tax exemption after the merger of former tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

They claimed the government had no justification for collecting taxes from the people of tribal districts. The tribespeople had suffered huge losses during militancy and subsequent military operations, they argued.

“While we are yet to see the fruits of merger, the government has started collecting toll tax from us, which is sheer injustice,” one protester complained.

A hydraulic excavator was used to dismantle the structure in the Katta Kushtha locality of Jamrud. The transporters also put on fire some items of the toll plaza.

Traffic on the busy highway remained suspended for more than two hours. Most of steel items were taken away by the protesters.

The transporters had been protesting the collection of the toll tax from heavy vehicles taking trade goods to neighbouring Afghanistaninfo-icon.
