Taliban meeting scrapped after Kabul concerns: Khan

Taliban meeting scrapped after Kabul concerns: Khan

Mar 26, 2019 - 08:52

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistani prime minister says he has scrapped a planned meeting with Talibaninfo-icon in Islamabad following objections from the government in Kabulinfo-icon.

Speaking to journalists at his office in Islamabad on Monday, Imran Khan said: “My meeting with the Taliban was scheduled but it was cancelled due to the Afghan government’s concerns.”

After recent talks with the United States in Qatar, the Taliban called off the meeting, arguing most of the members of their negotiating team were unable to travel because of US and UN sanctions.

Leaders of the militant group were scheduled to arrive in Islamabad in mid-February to meet Prime Minister Khan and possibly US officials.

On his government’s foreign policy, Khan said: “Earlier, the US was asking us to do more but now it acknowledges there will be no peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon without Pakistaninfo-icon’s support.”
