MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Former Talibaninfo-icon leader Syed Akbar Agha has said US special representative for Afghan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad could only discuss foreign factors of the Afghan conflict with the Taliban.

Addressing a gathering of religious scholars in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province on Thursday, Agha said all parties to the conflict should put real efforts to end the on-going conflict in the country.

He asked the Afghan government and the Taliban not to victimise the on-going peace efforts for the sake of their personal interest.

He demanded the peace process should enter the intra-Afghan phase as soon as possible in which ulemainfo-icon, influential persons could play the role of mediators and discharge their national and Islamic responsibility.

He said the Taliban demands included withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistaninfo-icon and some reforms within the government.

Agha expressed deep concern over the growing number of civilian casualties in Taliban attacks and government forces airstrikes and operations.

“Khalilzad is a foreign envoy, his role is limited and he is talking to the Taliban regarding the pullout of foreign forces,” he said.
