FIROZKOH (Pajhwok): Residents of Saghar district of western Ghorinfo-icon province on Sunday claimed construction work on a girls’ school remained halted for the last eight years for unknown reasons.

Around 2,000 girls have been studying under the open skies due to the lack of a building of the girls school in the district, the residents added.

Muhsin Karimzadah, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News schools in Saghar district had more students compared to schools in other districts, but lack of buildings negatively impacted their studies.

He said, “The government laid the foundation stone of the girls school eight years back but after some initial work, left it incomplete.”

Ghulam Ghaus, another resident, said the girls school in the past had an old building which further damaged with the passage of time.

A number of other residents held similar views and urged the government to pay strong attention to the issue.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Saber, the provincial educationinfo-icon department head, also confirmed the issue to Pajhwok and said construction work of schools worth $175,000 had been stopped.

He said the girls school construction was part of 13 other projects funded by the Worldinfo-icon Bank, but its construction could not be resumed over the past few years.
