Single source being created to advance peace talks: CEO

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday said a single source for peace negotiations was being created to centralize peace talks and represent the voices of the Afghans in a unified way.

Dr. Abdullah told a ceremony marking Worldinfo-icon Tuberculosis Day in Kabul that he was optimistic about peace in Afghanistaninfo-icon and that the fate of the country was in the hands of Afghans who did not want to a return to the dark days of the past.

He said the Afghans also wanted the presidential election to determine the fate of their country.

In other part of his speech, Abdullah called the attack on first vice president Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum as heinous crime and said Afghan security forces should protect the lives of all Afghans, particularly political figures.

The CEO said Dostum was one of the country’s influential and committed figures and ‘terrorists’ and their supporters could not tolerate his presence in Afghanistan.

The Taliban  attacked the convoy of Dostum in northern Balkh province late Saturday evening, killing one of his bodyguards and injuring two others.

“Continued war in Afghanistan is among problems the country’s healthinfo-icon sector is facing”, he said, adding that fighting diseases was not the responsibility of only the Ministry of Public Health, but of everyone and other organizations.

“Those who lose their lives for no access to health services is a crime, I want the warring sides to discharge their responsibility towards allowing people’s access to health services,” he said.

Abdullah praised the Ministry of Public Health, health officials and aid organizations in fighting against diseases and providing health services to the public and hoped the future government would prioritize the public health sector’s development.

He said natural disasters, people’s displacement had a key role in spreading diseases which fueled poverty among people.

Low awareness among people about diseases was one of the main problems in the fight against health issues, he said.
