Flash floods kill 141, destroy 27,000 homes

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): More than 140 people lost their lives and 242 others sustained wounds in recent floods that destroyed and damaged around 27,000 residential homes during the past one month, an official said Tuesday. 

Najib Aqa Fahim, State Minister for Natural Disaster Management, told a conference in Kabul that most of flood related casualties and damages happened in northern parts of the country.

He was addressing the conference entitled "The 5th National Water Conference - Water Resources Development and Management, Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects for Water Resources in Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

Without giving details, Fahim said as a result of flooding and damages, about 182,000 were displaced.

"In winter of last (solar) year, there was a lot of rainfall and, according to forecasts, there would be a lot of rains in the coming months, and we are worried about flooding.”

He called natural disasters more devastating than war-related events and said it should be seriously considered to reduce damages by natural disasters.

He said flash floods killed at least 141 people, injured 242 others and destroyed around 27,000 residential compounds and rendered homeless around 182,000 people.
