Paktika residents say civilians killed in Nika airstrike

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Local security officials claim 18 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have been killed in an airstrike in Nika district of southern Paktika province, but residents say those killed were civilians.

Surat Khan, a resident of Nika district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that foreign forces targeted civilians in an airstrike in Awsha village of the district on Tuesday night.

He said 18 civilians including womeninfo-icon and children were killed in the incident.

Another resident who wished to go unnamed also said all those killed in the bombardment were civilians and local people would possibly stage protests in response.

On the other hand, Paktika police chief Brig. Gen. Rogh Liwani rejected people’s claims and said Taliban insurgents were attacked in Nika district on Tuesday night.

He said 18 rebels were killed and their weapons and ammunition destroyed in the bombardment.

The Taliban also confirmed the airstrike. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said 12 civilians were killed and four houses destroyed in the US forces airstrike in Asheqi area of Nika district on Tuesday night.

Reported civilian casualties in airstrikes have recently increased across the country.
