Anti-locust campaign kicks off in Samangan

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Around 10,000 hectares of land in northern Samangan province would be cleared of locusts as a result of a campaign that kicked off on Sunday, an official said.

Senior agricultureinfo-icon official Gulabuddin Ghayasi told Pajhwok Afghan News the locusts had left their eggs on agriculture lands in different areas in the past one year.

The grasshoppers have started to come out of eggs in Aibak and Hazrat Sultan district, he said. During the locust eradication drive 8,000 litres of insecticide would be sprayed on crops and plants.

He said if the locusts had not been eradicated, they could have attacked standing crops. That could have badly damaged the crop yield, the official added.

Residents, meanwhile, welcomed the launch of the anti-locust drive. Shamsuddin, hailing from Tikhonak village, said locusts had surfaced over the past 10 days and had damaged green plants.

Abdul Rahman, an inhabitant of Hazrat Sultan district, said 10 workers with as many machines had arrived in his village. They have embarked on an anti-locust drive.

“Our crops would be affected badly if a proper campaign against locusts is not conducted,” he said.
