HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Protesting residents of western Herat province closed a major highway for a fourth day on Tuesday to demand construction of the Chishti Sharif district’s square.

Around 100 protestors have been closing the Chishti Shahrif-Herat highway against traffic for the past few days.

Teacher Habibullah, a resident of Chishti Sharif district and an organizer of the rally, told Pajhwok Afghan News the highway would not be reopened until the district square was constructed practically.

He warned if the square was not asphalted, they would not reopen the highway for traffic.

Allah Daad, another protestor, expressed similar views and said the government had long ignored the issue.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Himyat, provincial Public Works Department head, told Pajhwok the highway had been shut over the past four days against traffic.

He said the issue had been shared with the authorities concerned and a ministry delegation was said to be arriving today.
