SHARANA (Pajhwok):  Unknown gunmen shot and injured the Sarobi district chief in southeastern Paktika province on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Paktika police spokesman Shah Mahmood Aryun said the Sarobi district chief, Mohammad Raza Kharotai, came under attack from unknown assailants in the bazaar of Argun district.

Kharotai was rushed the Argun district hospital where he was under treatment, he said, adding police had launched their investigation into the attack. No one has so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

The hospital head, Dr. Ibrahim, confirmed receiving the district chief in injured condition. He said Kharotai had received three bullets but he was out of danger.

Meanwhile, a source said Kharotai was standing inside the shop of his nephew when unknown gunmen opened fire at him. The attackers then fled.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.
