Putin, Rahmon discuss situation in Afghanistan

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Russian President Vladimir Putin has discussed the situation in Afghanistaninfo-icon with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon in Moscow, a media report said on Thursday.

Speaking at a news conference following their meeting in the Russian capital on Wednesday, the two leaders stressed the importance of an Afghan settlement for stability in the region.

Anadulo Agency quoted the Russian president as hailing a decision to hold another meeting between the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and Afghanistan in Bishkek on April 18-19.

Putin and Rahmon also announced plans to further boost the military cooperation between the two nations.

Rahmon promised his country would continue to provide necessary assistance for implementation of a 2012 agreement between Russian and Tajikistan on the status of a Russian military base on Tajikistan’s territory.
