Khalilzad disappointed over intra-Afghan meeting delay

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhowk): US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Process Zalmay Khalilzad has expressed disappointment over the postponement of intra-Afghan meeting in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

“I'm disappointed Qatar's intra-Afghan initiative has been delayed. We're in touch with all parties and encouraged that everyone remains committed to dialogue and the Afghan peace process,” he twitted.

“Dialogue is and always will be key to a political roadmap and lasting peace. There is no alternative. I urge all sides to seize the moment and put things back on track by agreeing to a participant list that speaks for all Afghans. I stand ready to help if our help is needed,” he said.

A grand meeting of Afghan politicians and the Talibaninfo-icon was scheduled to take place on April 20, 21 but was delayed at last minutes due to lack of consensus on the list of participants.

However, Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies hosting the talks in Doha the dispute stemmed from disagreement over the size and composition of the respective delegations.

"This unfortunate postponement is necessary to build further consensus as to who should participate in the conference," Sultan Barakat, of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, said in a statement.
