LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Two new polio cases have surfaced in Washer and Nawzad districts of southern Helmand province, an official said on Monday.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Dr. Abdul Ahad Hazem told Pajhwok Afghan News the Talibaninfo-icon had earlier banned polio vaccination in the the districts but the restriction was lifted recently.

In Nawzad district, it was the second positive case detected in recent months. A few months earlier a polio case had emerged in the same family.

Hazem said the Taliban had imposed the ban on polio vaccination in some areas of Helmand. He warned more positive cases would surface if the ban on vaccination was not lifted.

But Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi insisted polio vaccination was not banned in Helmand. He accused polio workers of not discharging their duties in a proper manner.

It is worth mentioning that the Taliban emphasised on polio drops to be administered in local mosques instead of conducting a door-to-door campaign.
