KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Saffron has been grown this year for the first time in southeastern Khost province, giving satisfactory yield in some areas, officials and farmers say.

Satisfied with the production level, farmers urged the government to find a suitable market for their saffron, If an appropriate market was not found, the growers warned, they would stop cultivating the crop.

Much of saffron was cultivated in the Gurbaz district of the province, where land and climatic conditions are suitable for growing the crop.

Zar Wali, one of famers, said he had grown saffron on a piece of land. Most of his land is rain-fed but the yield was satisfactory because saffron requires less water.

He added others farms were irrigated several times a week but saffron was watered once or twice a year.

Bad Shah, another famer, held a similar view. He expressed happiness over the good saffron yield. He also asked the government to find a market for saffron and thereby other growers to cultivate saffron on their land.

Meanwhile, Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock Department official Eng. Baidar told Pajhwok Afghan News the issue of finding a market for saffron had been shared with authorities concerned.

The department has given plots to 140 farmers in Gurbaz district, which produced a satisfactory yield. Efforts were underway to promote saffron cultivation in the province, he concluded.
