Afghanistan: Pakistan, Iran back political settlement

Apr 23, 2019 - 11:18

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Chabahar and Gwadar ports would be linked through a railways network, says the Iranian president.

President Hassan Rouhani made the announcement at a joint press conference with Pakistaninfo-icon Prime Minister Imran Khan in Tehran on Monday

He said the two sides discussed peace and security in Afghanistaninfo-icon, bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest.

Iran, Pakistan and Turkey -- founders of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) -- were keen on reviving the railway line from Istanbul to Islamabad, Rouhani added.

Prime Minister Khan said four decades of war in Afghanistan had affected both Pakistan and Iran. Peace in Afghanistan was in the interest of both countries, he added.

“We will cooperate with each other on helping a political settlement of the Afghan issue as peace in the war-torn country will help both Pakistan and Iran,” he remarked.

Pakistan and Iran agreed on boosting security cooperation and creating a Joint Rapid Reaction Force to guard their common border.

Only justice would guarantee peace in the region, Khan believed, explaining that the use of force would not serve the interest of anyone.
