In push for intra-Afghan talks, Khalilzad returns to region

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Days after the cancellation of the Doha conference, US Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad embarked on a marathon visit to the region on Monday.

Khalilzad left Washington on Sunday on a trip that would run through May 11 and take him to Afghanistaninfo-icon and Qatar, the venue for talks with the Talibaninfo-icon.

The State Department said In Doha “he will continue to press forward on negotiations with the Taliban to reach a consensus on core national security issues, and urge their participation in an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue,”

A statement from the State Department said Khalilzad would also visit Pakistaninfo-icon, Afghanistan, India, Russia and Britain.

A dialogue planned between the Taliban and Afghan officials in Doha was scrapped last week due to differences between the two sides.

Ghani had announced a delegation of 250 people from all walks of life but the Taliban rejected the lengthy list, saying the meeting was “not an invitation to some wedding or other party.

On Saturday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed disappointment over the impasse during a telephone call with President Ghani.

The next round of talks would focus on a timetable for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan, says Taliban’s political spokesman Suhail Shaheen.
