Kandahar residents reject interim government idea

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Islamic scholars, youths and residents of southern Kandahar province on Wednesday voiced their support for the ongoing peace efforts and stressed that an acting or interim government could not be an alternative to the current system.

The views were expressed at a gathering held by the Tribal and Border Affairs Ministry in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, on Wednesday.

Tribal and Border Affairs Minister Mohammad Shafique Gul Agha Sherzai, Governor Hayatullah Hayat, some presidential advisors, influential figures and Islamic scholars attended the meeting.

Governor Hayat said war could not bring peace to the country, something proven by the history.

He added the government was making efforts to bring peace and stability to the country.

The governor said a number of ulemainfo-icon from Jeddah and Indonesia who recently held a conference in Kabulinfo-icon had rejected the ongoing conflict in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

He termed people’s role in the peace process vital and urged people to support the current government till achieving lasting peace in the country.

Others who spoke on the occasion included deputy minister of tribal and border affairs Mohammad Yaqoob Ahmadzai Ulema Council head Sheer Ahmad Haqyar, Mualvi Obaidullah Faizani and others. They asked the government and the Talibaninfo-icon to declare a bilateral ceasefire.
