New parliament set to be inaugurated tomorrow

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon Secretariat said on Thursday based on President Ashraf Ghani’s order the 17th legislative term of the National Assembly would be inaugurated tomorrow (Friday).

The Wolesi Jirga elections were held on October 20 nationwide except Ghazni and Kandahar provinces. The elections in Kandahar were held a week later.

Rahimullah Ghalib, deputy acting secretary of the lower house, told Pajhwok Afghan News all preparations had been made and the new assembly would be opened Friday.

Ghalib said a programme for lawmakers’ familiarisation with parliament had also been prepared and would be implemented by the president after the inauguration ceremony.

He added so far the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) had issued acknowledgement letters to 169 Wolesi Jirga election winners from 29 constituencies.

A government official, who wished go unnamed, told Pajhwok the National Assembly would be inaugurated to enable new MPs to participant in the upcoming Consultative Loya Jirgainfo-icon on peace.
