KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Skipper Gulbadin Naib is optimistic of Afghanistaninfo-icon proving their prowess at the Cricket Worldinfo-icon Cup, scheduled to begin next month in England.

Before the departure of the national team, which spent several weeks training in South Africa, Naib said in an interview his guys were well-prepared for the mega event.

“When I look at my team, we prepared very well the last couple of months,” he told AFP at the British embassy in Kabul. South Africa’s bouncy pitches were similar to conditions in Britain, he said.

Earlier in the month, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) appointed Nabi as captain, replacing Asghar Afghan -- a decision that triggered controversy coming.

However, the 28-year-old Naib downplayed the spat and said that the team had several other players with experience to lead the squad.

Giles Lever, British deputy ambassador, said the cricketing extravaganza offered Afghanistan an opportunity to show the world their strength.

“Not war, not political divisions, but Afghans working together on the world stage to achieve your common dream, which is victory in the World Cup,” Lever remarked.
