LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A third polio positive case has surfaced in Nawzad district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Wednesday.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Dr. Abdul Ahad Hazem told Pajhwok Afghan News the Talibaninfo-icon had earlier banned polio vaccination in Washer and Nawzad districts but the restriction was recently lifted.

He said the 3rd positive case of polio had been detected in Nawzad district.

Earlier, during the ongoing year, the two new polio cases had also surfaced in Washer and Nawzad districts, he said.

Hazem said Taliban militants allowed polio vaccination only at mosques in Nawzad, Sangin, Musa Qala, Kajaki, Washer and Baghran districts, which was not a proper way.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Khan, a civil societyinfo-icon activist, said if polio vaccination did not take place in a proper manner, more positive cases could surface in future. He urged the Taliban not to ban polio vaccination in Helmand.

But Taliban spokesman Qari YousufAhmadi insisted they had placed no restrictions on polio vaccination in the province. He accused polio workers of not discharging their duty in a proper manner.

It is worth mentioning that the Taliban emphasize on giving polio drops to children in local mosques instead of allowing a door-to-door campaign.
