KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Consultative Loya Jirgainfo-icon Commission’s chief Omar Daudzai on Wednesday said efforts were underway to convince ex-president Hamid Karzai and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah to attend the closing ceremony.

The Consultative Loya Jirga that kicked off on last Monday in Kabul was scheduled to continue for four days to discuss a framework for peace talks, a possible agreement with Talibaninfo-icon and set out conditions for reconciliation.

Objections from members

On the first day of the massive gathering, President Ghani named Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayyaf as chairman of the Loya Jirga and later Habiba Surabi, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi and Fazal Hadi Muslimyar were nominated as deputies.

However, some participants objected to the nomination of deputies without a ballot and thus the event was adjourned. Those protesting against the announcement of deputies inside the jirgainfo-icon tent told Pajhwok the deputies should have been elected.

The ongoing on assembly was scheduled to end on Thursday but it was extended until Friday (May 3).

Questions about peace

Members of the jirga on Tuesday constituted 51 working committees and appointed their heads and secretaries. The committees will come up with answers to four basic questions regarding peace.

The questions pertain to convincing the Taliban into peace, preserving past achievements, composition of the government’s negotiating team and government policy towards neighbours.

Daudzai pointed to the Loya Jirga Commission head’s statement that 45 percent of the assembly’s work had been done.
