Test to determine gender of foetus banned in Herat

Test to determine gender of foetus banned in Herat

May 01, 2019 - 15:33

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Public Healthinfo-icon Department in western Herat province on Wednesday announced banning the test to determine the gender of foetus due to the probability of abortions in countries like Afghanistaninfo-icon.

A statement from the department received by Pajhwok Afghan News said advance information about the gender of an unborn baby by gynaecologists and ultrasound specialists to parents had negative consequences in the province.

Provincial health officials urged ultrasound specialists and gynaecologists to avoid predicting the baby sex before birth.

However, some doctors in the province opposed the ban and argued that parents have the right to know their baby sex before his/her birth to take enough preparations for them.

The tests also are banned in India and China as most parents ‘misuse’ the advance information as they prefer boys over girls and use the information to carry out abortions.
