SHARAN (Pajhwok): Around 140 people were taken sick after eating poisonous food at a wedding party in the Orgon district of southeastern Paktika province, an official said on Thursday.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Dr. Abdul Hadi Hashimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident occurred in the Sorkamar village of the district late on Wednesday night.

He said: “More than 100 poisoned people were evacuated to the area’s main hospital and 34 others were taken to the district clinic. The individuals are suffering from fever, diarrhea and vomittin.

The director said efforts were underway to ascertain the reason behind the incident. Food samples from the wedding party were sent to the laboratory last night.

Niak Mohammad, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok his friends were poisoned after they ate meals at the wedding ceremony.

He said residents of the area were worried and urged health officials to specify what had happened to the guests.

On the other hand, family members of the bridegroom eschewed sharing their viewpoint in this regard.

Meanwhile, police spokesman Shah Mahmood Aryan said an investigation into the incident was ongoing and further details would be shared later on.
