Return of refugees priority in peace framework: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani says the repatriation of refugees and resolving problems of the disabled and martyrs’ families are top priorities within the peace framework.

Ghani spelled out the promises during meetings with representatives of different groups of the people at the Presidential Palace on Friday evening, a statement from his office said.

Initially, he met representatives of Ghazni, Bamyan, Daikundi and MaidanWardak provinces. Ghani said basic changes would be made in agricultureinfo-icon and investment lured into higher educationinfo-icon.

Concrete measures were underway by security and defence forces to maintain order as they had been successful in achieving their objectives, the president told his interlocutors.

At a separate meeting with representatives of Takhar and Badakhshan provinces, Ghani promised early power generation by Shewan dam.

He said the banks of Amo river would be reinforced, calling better water control a priority. He urged residents of the provinces to pay serious attention to livestock and vowed to remove hurdles to promoting agriculture.

“Hundreds of womeninfo-icon from these provinces are educated but they remain jobless. The Ministry of Education should bring them into its system. An education institute will be established in Badakhshan,” Ghani informed.

The security sector would discuss the protection of mines in these provinces, he added.

The president also met victims of war, families of martyred security forces and People’s Peace Movement (PPM) representatives on Friday evening.

Ghani acknowledged the problems in providing the concession and other rights but asked the representatives to prepare a list of the disabled and martyred families for better provide of coupons and aid.

He ordered the head of Administrative Affairs Office at the Presidential Palace to create a special secretariat for the disabled and martyrs’ families.

Without the repatriation of refugees, the country would remain incomplete, Ghani remarked at a meeting with representatives in Iran, Pakistaninfo-icon and Europe.

“We are waiting for their (refugees’) honorable return and it is our priority within the peace framework,” he explained. “European Union is our strategic partner and we are working on a plant to bring the refugees gradually to Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

Ghani directed the Central Statistics Organisation to resolve passport-related issues of all Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan.

The president also met representatives of the National Women Coalition for Peace. He said the his government was protecting women’s rights.

“This system is a legacy of the nation, which will appoint its next president in September. But our focus should be on the system,” he said, hailing women’s rule as crucial.
