KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Mohammad Hakim Torsan, a presidential candidate known for side-splitting jokes on his political rivals on Facebook and tit-for-tat ripostes from opponents, has emerged as an atypical character.

Eighteen runners, including Mohammad Hakim Torsan, are in the run for the September 28 presidential election. Some traits have made him a topic of discussion for people on social media.

After announcing his candidacy, Torsan had said, “I will not even hire as my soup bearers both of them, Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah (presidential candidates),”

This was his first statement after registering as a presidential wannabe, grabbing a lot of public attention. He has since kept a number of social media users busy talking about Torsan.

Later, he participated in a television programme, where a popular Afghan singer, Mujdah Jamalzadah, was also invited. “Mujdah Jamalzadah would be my secretary if U form a government,”

Humorous posts on Facebook

A popular quiz on Facebook among Afghans was also launched about Torsan who said it did not run by him. The quiz when clicked, was saying “What Hakim Torsan say about you?” which giving different funny answers to different people who could then share it with their other Facebook friends.

One of the answers of the quiz was, “When I become the president, I would not take you as my soup waitress because you would snip (steal money) from the costs of oil and meat,”

Public comments

A number of Facebook users have made different comments on answers given on the quiz programme. “Please keep away from this candidate, Oh my God, Shame is a good thing” are some of the comments made about Torsan.

Let my personality be damaged

In response to the question whether such Facebook posts would damage his personality, Torsan replied: “Let my personality be damaged. I strongly believe in the freedom of speech.”

When asked if humorous posts about him on Facebook an early election campaign, he said: “No, it isn’t electioneering as such. it is not from us or our supporters.”

Reminded of his statements that he would not hire Ghani and Abdullah even as his soup waiters, he said: “What have they done for the people. Who are forced to mock them? The pains of the public force me to make such statements. I have no personal issues with them.”

About his statements on a TV programme that he would hire Mujda Jamalzadah as his secretary, Torsan said: “It was an entertainment programme and I was just joking. I respect Jamalzadah.”

About jokes and his fake ID on Facebook, Torsan said: “I didn’t create this account. I visited the page, on which youth share jokes about me.”

What made Torsan popular?

Syed Mohammad Adil, a resident of Kabul, said: “I don’t know Torsan, who gained popularity after releasing statements about the president and CEO Abdullah and launching a Facebook quiz. He said many people on social media in Afghanistaninfo-icon were currently familiar with Torsan.

Election campaign

Habib Rahman Nang, Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) secretary was asked whether or not Torsan’s popularity on social media mounted to an election campaign. He replied they could not comment on the issue at this stage. The question would be shared with the media committee of the commission.

Who is Torsan?

Mohammad Hakim Torsan is a resident of Kabul, born in 1954. Hailing from the Uzbek tribe, he received his bachelor in Persian Literature from Kabul University. He has served in different areas, including information, administration and security between 1979 and 1992 in Afghanistan.

Torsan has been part of political activities since 1972 and is currently a member of Hezb-i-Mutahid Milli party. He also founded a tourist travel-facilitating company.
