2 dead, 5 injured as Balkh commanders clash

May 08, 2019 - 13:14

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): At least seven people have suffered casualties as a result of a clash between two pro-government commanders in northern Balkh province, an official said on Wednesday.

The firefight occurred between uprising commander Hazrat Mohammad Gurgrey and Afghan Local Police commander Toofan in the Balkh district bazaar on Tuesday evening.

Police spokesman Adel Shah Adel told Pajhwok Afghan News a guard of Gurgrey and a civilian were killed and five others wounded, including two supporters of Toofan in the clash.

Adel linked the clash with personal enmity between the commanders. The police personnel have controlled the situation and launched an investigation into the incident.

Haji Ghulam Mohammad, an eyewitness, said the gunbattle happened at a time when shopkeepers were closing their shops and heading to the mosqueinfo-icon to break their fast.

The clash erupted following a verbal dispute between the two parties. Two civilians were killed in the gunbattle that occurred 400 metres from the district police headquarters.
